what kind of adult medicine could i give my dog for arthritis because i can;t afford the stuff from the vets?
because i can't afford the medicine that vets prescribed as i am on a fixed income
Be frank with the vet. Ask for a cheaper alternative. My dog has allergies and the vet prescribed Benadryl, and I immediately asked if I could just use the normal drug I can get over the counter. He agreed that this would indeed be cheaper and instructed me on proper dosage. This weekend my dog was vaccinated, and the vet recommended Aspirin for the pain in case the dog looked uncomfortable. Sure enough, he was limping in the afternoon and I gave him 1 pill of adult aspirin, which I bought for $.99 a bottle.
So I believe there are regular medicines you can give that are cheaper than the stuff sold at the vet's but you need to discuss it with your vet first. Just tell him or her up front that you are on a fixed income and that you just can't afford the stuff prescribed. The issue with giving a random dose of aspirin is that if you aim too low the dog will continue to be in pain, and if you aim too high it might be very harmful to him. A good vet will work with you on that.
