Dog Arthritis Natural
Hi there I have 2 german shepherds who run around daft in the garden. They are only 8 months old and each have?
suffered from sore legs. This problem tends to recur every 4 weeks or so. The vet then prescribes Norocarp. We are about to start them on Glucosamine & Chondroitin tablets. This natural remedy is normally recommended for older Dogs With Arthritis. Has anyone used it for young dogs and has it been successful in treating sore legs?
Norocarp is an anti-inflamatory. Glucosamine and Chondroitin work on preserving cartilage in the joints. While it is true that destruction of the cartilage results in arthritis which is inflammatory, not all inflammations are related to either arthritis or joints.
You can feed Glucosamine and Condroitin as a supplement in anticipation of cartilage deterioration with age, but it is unlikely to affect their current lameness. If you really think this is dysplasia,.then you need to get hip x-rays for a definitive diagnosis.
At eight months old, I'd be wondering about "wandering leg" lameness, "growing pains," or more correctly called panosteitis. I think that is more likely. If they are not eating large breed ADULT food at this age, that's probably what it is. By six months of age, large breed dogs like GSDs should be on adult food. The nutrient profile of puppy food is too rich, causing the pups to grow too quickly resulting in pano.
On the spazy behavior, GSDs are herding dogs. That means high energy. They're going to bounce off the walls, particularly if they don't get enough exercise. Hand walking alone is unlikely to be enough for the vast majority of GSDs. I exercise mine with three games of fetch of 10-20 duration each, scattered throughout the day.
