How to help a dog with arthritic pain relief..that's not mine?

My friend, who loves his dog but is broke, has no idea what to do for his 11 year old mix (lab and lord knows what, big dog). The poor dog hurts so bad he can barely lay down. It's his hips and legs. He toggles back and forth on his front legs when he's standing because they hurt so bad. His joints are swollen. What can I do with not much money, and what kind of human meds can you give a dog for pain and inflammation? Please help, and thanks.
PS I would take him to a vet if I could, but I can't. I'm looking for a "trip to the drugstore" kind of pain relief. Today.

I agree with the aspirin. There is also an over the counter glucosamine supplement for dogs and cats available at stores like PetCo, etc. It really does help, especially big dogs with hip dysplsia.
