How to treat hip dysplasia in a dog.?
My dog is only 4 1/2 years old. He is an English Shepherd. He only has it in the right hip with no arthritis yet. Is there anything I can do to help him other than surgery right now? Can we do anything to stop the progression of this dreaded disease? Please help we do not have the money for a hip replacement.
MSM and glucosamine are the two best supplements for orthopedic issuse. There is a rub on linament called DMSO that is used in large livestock. Our vet uses it on dogs too. It works wonders and is absorbed through the skin. I believe it is the pure form of MSM.
Limiting strenuous exercise, using NSAIDs as needed, and even steroids if arthritis is an issue are all things vets can suggest. Using water therapy (swimming) will improve the muscles around the area without stressing the bone.
Dogs who have the surgery still have issues. In a few years they are in as bad of shape as they were before surgery. If you just leave the leave the dog as she is, use aspirin and other NSAIDs as needed, give supplements and ask your vet about DMSO, your dog will do just as well as if she had the surgery in the long term.
